First and foremost, Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin would have been exactly in ecstasy with this dictionary... What a marvelous dictionary to behold!!! We are speechless in the USA just by looking at these handsome volumes one after another. The Great Academic Dictionary of the Russian Language (the most correct English name for it or Le Grand Dictionnaire Academique De La Langue Russe ). They all sound very impressive outside or inside, as well as at its uttermost unbiased position being the language of The Greatest Russians... We are glad that The Russian Academy has no interest in making a monster dictionary like the 20 volume Oxford English Dictionary which is considered as a lexicographical bardak [filled with filth and profanities] comparing to our extremely cultured and intelligent GAD (Great Academic Dictionary). This dictionary did not just grow like a mushroom from nowhere! Those red volumes even smell and show the lively presence of the Academician Jacob Karlovich Grot. His entire spirit is in the very central style of lexicographical [particular and very polite at the same time though] complete lexical structure representing Russian Literature and nothing else. This dictionary is one of the highly respected and leading dictionaries in the world for being 100% unoffensive, 100% unbiased, and 100% true, 100% Beauty, 100% Free of DOGMAS of any kind - a shining example of a very supremely styled Russian Language embracing our Great Russian Graceful God given Letters and Literature. It is 100% fit for the Intelligentia. One can even go to bed with a volume of Great Academic Dictionary and read. It is comfortably fit to hold, and the font size is human [so my grandmother can also read without eyeglasses]. The Oxford English Dictionary is crammed and soullessly exhausting
half of OED is filled with dead words, and almost 40% of the lexicon comes from technical English, whereas Our Great Academic Dictionary is very articulate and scrupulous. If we include Russian colloquialism and profanity then the Great Academic Dictionary would be in 50 volumes or more. We can all cherish those 150 thousand words lavishly flooded with almost 800 thousand quotations. The entire Oxford English Dictionary which has 650 thousand words [mish-mash foreign bazar of piles of old daed words, and it is crammed with Latin economic and legal words]. Not more then 150-200 thousand words are used in both English and Russian languages on a good day by highly educated elite from the Ivory Towers... It is also left for very special people who appreciate everything is said or published by the Academy... Great Academic Dictionary of the Russian Language is not for criticism.
